Star Rating: 5 stars

Genre:
Thriller, medical thriller

Synopsis:
Meghan is trying to figure out how to be a single mom to a teenage daughter and work as a full time ICU nurse. When a new patient comes in named Cailtin, who apparently jumped from a bridge, Meghan starts to question things.

When a witness comes forward with shocking details about Cailtin’s fall, they learn she was pushed…but by who?

Meghan has always tried to stay emotionally detached from her patients but this time she seems to have gotten too close. Only when she’s gotten too close does she realize it may be too late.

Thoughts:
This book was a lot of fun. It was seemingly mundane, and then we started getting into things and the pieces started coming together, and the twists began. I didn’t realize when I signed up for this one that it was a medically adjacent thriller, which was a surprise for me because I love this usually, as was the case here.

I felt that while this was a plot driven story, the characters were well developed, and I felt like I was right there with them on this journey. I really enjoyed not only the main character, but the side characters as well and I felt like they added a lot to the story and kept it moving forward. The main character was really interesting and multi-faceted. I loved how she was working on finding her way as a single mom. Her daughter was also an interesting character. Being a teenager is hard, and then to find out what she did would be tough. Meghan’s ex, Ben was also interesting, his character showed up towards the end and I was satisfied the way that his plot line wrapped up and tied in with the overall plot.

The pacing was on par with what I like for a thriller if not a little slower, but not horribly slow. The second half of the book was much faster than the first, but that makes sense as things were building in the beginning. Despite a slower start, I did stay engaged and kept wanting to know what was happening and didn’t want to put it down. I think that sometimes the world building takes a while and that was the case here, it wasn’t bad.

I think that the author did such a fantastic job with the writing in this one. Not only were the characters on point, but the emotions felt by them were also fantastic. I could feel what they felt through the page and boy was it a journey.

I think that this is my favorite book yet by Mary Kubica and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
