Overall Take:
What a unique debut! I’d never read one quite like this.

Contemporary, Magical Realism
Synopsis:
After a night out Laruen returns home to her husband, except she’s not married and she’s never seen this man before.
As Lauren tries to piece things together, her husband heads up into the attic to replace a lightbulb, and a new husband comes down. Lauren rinses and repeats a few times, and well every time there is a flaw with her new husband.
As each husband passes, Lauren wonders if switching lives is so easy, how do you know you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better?
Thoughts:
This book was a hoot. I am glad that I listened to this story because it was easier for me to keep track of all the characters this way. There were so many husbands! I know they mentioned how many she was up to, but wow. I got a little overwhelmed and I was glad that we didn’t spend all that much time with them. This book was more an exploration of self, and I really enjoyed that. However, I felt that it didn’t quite end up that way because the ending was rather abrupt. Rather than flesh out why the exploration was over, the book just ended. Yes, the ending was the ending I felt she deserved, but it was not the ending I wanted. I feel that this is a disconnect between the author and the reader, because to me it means the author didn’t portray the story in the way they intended after all. It’s not something that happens to me often, and it is quite frustrating when it happens, so I do adjust my rating accordingly.
I think that this was a really strong debut and this is an author I’m excited to continue reading.
