Audiobook: Ready or Not

5 Star

Overall Take:
New take on a trope that is hit or miss for me, and it was a hit!

Star Rating:
4.5 Stars

Genre:
Contemporary Romance, Chick Lit

Synopsis:
When Eve finds herself unexpectedly pregnant from a one-night stand her life is about to take some turns she didn’t expect. Thankfully she has her best friend Willa close by and Willa’s steadfast older brother Shep. But when things with Willa start to feel off, Shep is the one that steps in and takes the lead. It isn’t long before Eve sees Shep in a new light and rethinking everything she thought she knew about herself and her world.

Thoughts:
Surprise pregnancy isn’t exactly a trope I hate, but it is a trope I need to be done well, and in this case, I figured it would be worth the read since the author is upfront and doesn’t spring it on us mid book – the whole book is about a surprise pregnancy, so it just worked. I felt that the explanation and build up to what lead to the “surprise” portion was believable.

I felt that this book was also part coming of age novel part romance novel, and it was beautifully written. I loved getting to know Eve as well as her friends and the father of her baby. The character growth that Eve faced over the course of the book was great and she really came into herself as a person.

The chemistry that was present between Eve and Shep was phenomenal, but their story was so sweet and lovely that it just made me swoon. It also all felt so realistic at the same time. Normally a slow burn can get frustrating, but theirs was just marvelous and kept you drawn in that I didn’t care. The dialogue and banter that they shared was great and just top-notch. It kept me engaged and I wanted to keep listening.

This is a book that I could totally see being made into a feel-good Netflix or Hallmark movie, it is just that good and such an emotional journey.

The narrator, Karissa Vacker, did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life and giving them each a unique voice. I love when the narrator can take the words on the page and give them the emotions and infliction that they need.

I recommend this book for those who are looking for a nontraditional love story. Yes, there is an unplanned pregnancy, but it’s dealt with in a wonderfully delicate way, and it feels very realistic, and it’s so well done.
